In many ways, Barbie has been a world wide phenomenon since her beginning.  The concept for an adult fashion doll originally came from a German doll named Bild Lilli.  Bild Lilli began life as a cartoon character in a German newspaper.

Barbie first appeared as an American doll in 1959. By 1961, she was also being marketed in Europe. Today, she appears in some 45 nationalities, and is sold in over 150 countries at the rate of two dolls sold worldwide every second.

As the Barbie doll began to spread beyond the US, special dolls were created for sale in the various countries.  At first, these tended to be reworked versions of the usually blonde, blue eyed Barbie that had taken the American market by storm.  Generally the clothing was changed and the packaging was done in the language of the country in question.

Many of the European dolls, for example, are close versions of dolls that first appeared in the US. European Barbies have had a wide array of fictional family members and friends including Barbie’s long time boyfriend, Ken.

As time went on, some of the Barbie dolls for sale in other countries became brunettes with faces, skin tones, and eyes somewhat more closely resembling the country they represented, but always retaining that unmistakable Barbie flair.

In 1980, the forerunner to the popular Dolls of the World line began with the International series.  The first dolls of the International series included Italian Barbie, Parisian Barbie, and Royal Barbie of the United Kingdom.

In 2000, the Dolls of the World, Princess Collection™ made its debut. This series ran until 2008 and featured beautiful dolls dressed in rich royal robes depicting the royal traditions of many different countries.

The latest variation on the Dolls of the World collection is the Landmark series. These Barbies wear gowns showcasing world landmark destinations.  There are currently 4 dolls in this series: the Sydney Opera House doll, the Statue of Liberty doll, the Eiffel Tower doll, and the Big Ben doll.

Today, the Dolls of the World collection continues, giving us a wide array of dolls representing peoples from all over the world. Many collectors choose to acquire at least one of these dolls to honor their own ancestral heritage.

Mattel has a team of talented hair stylists and make up artists to create and maintain the beauty of Barbie, making sure she is always picture perfect.

Finally, she spends time in a customized heating machine, which is used to set her hairstyle.

Being a true fashion icon, Barbie never leaves home without makeup. Before a new Barbie Doll is born, designers must produce a prototype doll, selecting the right skin tone  color palette for eye shadow, eyeliner and blush. It can take up to three hours to hand-paint the model for the new doll’s face. This is done using water based acrylics and tiny brushes. The key is in the blending.
